MONTHLY COMPETITIONS...

An element of the more formal club meeting is the club competition. This is divided into four sections. The first two allow members to vote on the best coins (Pre-1662 and Post 1662) found by a member since the previous meeting. The date 1662 referring to the date when hammered coinage ceased. The other two categories relate to finds ie Early and Late Find. The cut-off date for these categories is 1800, therefore we have a competition for finds that pre-date 1800 ie. Pre-1800 Find and those dating from later ie Post-1800.

Each member is allowed one vote in each category and must not vote for their own coin or find. All items submitted to the competitions must have been found since the previous club meeting. New members are not allowed to submit items into the competitions until their second month of membership.

All items must be placed in envelopes accompanied by a written description. These details should not contain the name of the finder.
Points are allocated according to the number of votes and the places gained.

  • Ten points for first place Five points for second place
  • Three points for third place.

One point for every item entered. In the event of a tie between first and second place, the room shall have another vote on just those two items. In the event of a tie between second and third place, or a joint second place, the points shall be shared i.e. 4 points apiece.
All points awarded shall be added for the purpose of finding a Detector User of the Year i.e. the member with the most points at the end of the December meeting. This user will be awarded a suitable trophy.
Tokens, including lead tokens, counterfeit coins and coins with holes in them, intentional or not, will all be accepted as COINS, in competition. Love tokens are COINS. Coins with any kind of mount (removeable or not) will only be accepted in the FINDS category.
Complete hoards of coins will only be accepted if accompanied by indisputable evidence of a container, and should be entered into the FINDS categories.
If a member has a coin or find that he is unable to identify then he/she must bring it to the club meeting for help in identification. If the club cannot identify the item then he/she is allowed to enter it at a later time provided that he/she announces this fact to the members. He/she will forego entering anything else into the category in which the object awaiting identification would have been entered.
It is expected that a coin or find is displayed in such a manner that both sides can be seen. Small trophies or a £2 book voucher is awarded to the winners., and there is much friendly rivalry in these competitions.
